Desmond Egan, Poet

Desmond Egan is a full-time writer, author of 18 books of poetry; one of Prose; and 2 Translations of Greek Plays.  18 Collections of his Poetry have been published in book form in translation in France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Russia, Japan, Czech Republic, Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary - with others forthcoming in China, Croatia etc. Egan is Artistic Director, since its inception, of The Hopkins International Conference ‘the best literary festival in Ireland’. (Editor, The Oxford Companion to Irish Literature).

Egan received an Honorary Doctorate in Literature from Washburn University (1998). Two books have been published in USA about his work, one, Desmond Egan: the Poet and his Work edited by Hugh Kenner; the second, Desmond Egan written by Brian Arkins. Two Documentaries have appeared, one in 2000 and the second, Desmond Egan: Through the Eyes of a Poet on DVD in 2005.

Egan’s work has been the subject of several MA and Doctoral theses; and of many Critical Articles. He has been described by Professor Peter Van der Kamp as ‘the most translated contemporary Irish poet’ and by Professor Hugh Kenner as ‘ A major Irish poet, his poems represent an enormous advance … I know of nothing quite like them: it makes me think we have moved a generation beyond even the accomplishment of Heaney’

Recent entries on Egan, among others, appear in The Encyclopaedia of Ireland (2001) and in The Oxford Companion to Irish Literature (1997).
